The Worst Horror Film We’ve Ever Watched

Elizabeth Anderson

Do you feel like you’re too old for the Sunday morning reruns of Scooby Doo? Do you still miss the crazy hijinks, unbelievable villains that get unmasked, and horrible plans to split up? Do you ever find yourself wishing for this but with antifeminism, cannibalism, and even bigger plot holes? Then this is the wonderful Troma movie for you.

Rabid Grannies is a slip and slide of gore straight into tears of laughter. From the opening scene you are immediately immersed into the horribly dubbed French-American film. The movie, filmed in Belgium by French actors trying to speak English, and then overdubbed by American actors making minimum wage and in a hurry turns out exactly as horribly as you’d think it would. Troma, the studio, known for their bad movies including Poultrygeist, Nuke-Em High, and Toxic Avenger, really “knocks” it out of the park with this one.

The plot is poorly written and the dialogue even worse. It also includes horror cliches such as “have-sex-and-you-die,” and “alcohol-makes-you-die.” While sitting down to a lovely family dinner, the two “grannies,” who aren’t even grandmothers to anyone, suddenly receive a mysterious present for their birthday full of ancient, devilish horror. After the caviar and crown roast, they eat their niece for dessert before sending the family into poorly acted hysterics. The pandemonium ensues and the multiple family members end up split into groups hiding around the house. Mother of the year, leaves her children in the bathroom, and doesn’t remember to get them until hours later.

The movie doesn’t give you a character’s name until almost 20 minutes into the movie, forcing us to give them fun nicknames such as “Blind Homeless Seth Rogen,” “Fat Hitler,” and the nickname already supplied by the films horrible dialogue, “The Family Virgin.”

The two monsters are easily amused. Sing them “Happy Birthday” or give them a piece of organ to play with and they are willing to sit happily in the play room without bothering anyone. They also “level up” halfway through the film, obtaining new powers, new armor, and even more disturbing facial features. However, through the power of the holy spirit, the evil is defeated, kind of. This movie leaves a wonderful cliffhanger for those fans hoping for a sequel (please no.)

All in all, this movie was a fun ride. It was full of laughs and made for lots of good jokes even though very little of the movie is actually scary unless you have “badcameraworkaphobia.” The movie is completely free and available on Youtube, as well as several other free sites, so feel free to watch a gore filled comedy.
