Boys’ Basketball
Madison Consolidated Athletics has had recent successes and improvements in its winter sports, starting with the return of Cubs’ guard Mason Davis.
Davis is a 5’10” junior who was the Cubs’ second-leading scorer last year and has been out for five weeks, missing nine straight games. Davis became unavailable after breaking his thumb at the season’s first game against Southwestern.
Davis returned against Lawrenceburg and helped keep the Madison Cubs in the fight with 11 points and two assists; the Cubs lost 49-45.
Even with the Cubs losing, Davis is still grateful to be back.
“It feels good to be back playing again and playing with my team,” Davis said.
Davis is also very excited for the future and what is to come with the Madison Cubs Basketball Team: “It gives our guards more opportunity. I’ll be a ball handler, (and) it will help Quincy (Reynolds), Landon (True), Oscar (Gonzalez), and Damon (Harden) be able to get out in transition to shoot.”
The Madison Basketball program is excited to have Davis back in the rotation.
“Mason’s impact was felt right away. It’s not that we couldn’t compete without him,” said MCSH Varsity Assistant Jake Shockley, “but I think he added a swagger we were missing. He obviously contributed against Lawrenceburg and Richmond.”
The Cubs narrowly lost to undefeated 4a Richmond the night following Lawrenceburg.
Bowling
Three of Madison’s bowlers competed in the state Regional competition: Kallie Eder, Bryce Miller, and Taylor Miller.
They performed well, with Eder placing seventh and Bryce Miller placing 20th. Yet, both Cub Bowlers came up short of advancing to the semistate competition.
Eder said, “I did not expect to make it to regionals since it was my first year, and I was a little nervous, but I did well, and I’m proud of myself.”
However, Lady Cub Bowler Taylor Miller placed fourth in regionals, allowing her to compete for a title at Semistate in Terra Haute this Saturday.
Wrestling
MCHS sophomore wrestler Maylie Skinner competed in the IHSGW Semistate; Skinner came second, earning her a trip to the State Finals.
Skinner is one of three Madison ladies who are multi-state qualifiers. Skinner competed hard and almost had it but unfortunately lost in the first round.
Even After the loss, Skinner looks forward to competing for more titles.
“Going to state this year, I had high expectations because of how I did last year and how much I improved over the offseason. However, I didn’t reach my goal, which was upsetting, but I’m learning from my losses and will come back stronger for the next year and year later.”
Girls’ Basketball
Madison Girls basketball has drawn its sectional matchup. They will be playing North Harrison in round one and will be playing Salem if they advance. The Lady Cubs previously defeated North Harrison 47-37 this past Tuesday and defeated Salem 53-26 back in November and look to use that success as a springboard for the postseason.
