PS4 Users Feel Cheated, Is Sony to Blame?
September 21, 2016
It’s official. On September 9th, after more than three months of delays, Bethesda announced that Fallout 4 and Skyrim Special Edition will not not be receiving mod support on the PS4 version of the game. Bethesda says that Sony is to blame.
In an official statement made on Bethesda’s website, they stated, “We consider this an important initiative and we hope to find other ways user mods can be available for our PlayStation audience. However, until Sony will allow us to offer proper mod support for PS4, that content for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PlayStation 4 will not be available.”
Mod support has been available for Fallout 4 on the XBox One since May, plans for mod support to be available for Skyrim Special Edition are well underway, and Microsoft has made sure to let everyone know.
Sony has made no official announcement on the matter, but speculations are lingering that Sony thought it would be better to keep mods off the console due to performance problems. Reports from testers that when mods were introduced to the PS4 during the development process said that the PS4 had huge issues running them and their performance was cut in half.
Others speculate that Sony did not like the plans to have a low regulation on the mod space. Bethesda announced that their plans for console mods will have little regulation, only banning nudity mods and mods using licensed materials. Some are saying Sony may want more control over the creative mod space.
In any case, Bethesda has been touting mod support for consoles as a major selling point since the release of Fallout 4, there was a further push after the announcement of Skyrim Special Edition, and with it’s absence from the list of features, many PS4 users are feeling cheated.
