Mariah Carey’s always been one to cause an uproar in the tabloids and recent headlines include the singer being dismissive to fans and music industry celebrities Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande, and Jennifer Lopez and her new reality TV show, Mariah’s World on the E! Network.

Now Carey has discovered yet another way to turn heads. Her recent televised performance during Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin Eve with Ryan Seacrest was silent but spoke volumes. As the last music guest of the night after Fifth Harmony, Mariah was expected to give three performances. The first one that was given had a rocky beginning, with the singer motioning to her earpiece throughout the music, talking into the microphone that there were some technical issues, and she couldn’t hear her music playing correctly. She mumbled the first line of her song “Emotions,” and ended up just swaying to the music. Her second song didn’t make much of a difference, with Carey calling out the issue right on stage to the song “We Belong Together.” She danced with her backup dancers as the confused audience was invited to sing the song to the music. Her third song, “Auld Lang Syne” went by lip-synced.

MCHS Senior Nyla Dugle said, “It’s just embarrassing. I’m confused how a performer couldn’t get herself together. It’s her job to Improvise. Why couldn’t she have done something besides what she actually did?”

Through social media, the singer accused sabotage and the disaster culminated in Carey firing her creative director, Anthony Burrell. The stories rotating between Burrell and Mariah herself evolved with each interview and question. The story changed from Mariah properly checking the sound prior to the show airing to Mariah being careless and not showing up to rehearsal. The media grew frustrated and like any other celeb story, gave up, resolving it as another Mariah Mystery.

Mariah ranted on her reality show recently about this breed of situation stating, “It’s always my fault. It doesn’t matter. What I do is live in the solution, so I always have to acknowledge, take the blame, apologize and keep it moving.” Turns out the star has never taken too much blame for her coincidental failures, such as her controversial album release on the 9/11  which, for obvious reasons, did not take off too smoothly and her 2015 record labels were shot down for her decline of hits and fans.

Mariah Carey has always been one to make a statement. Maybe the singer will make a comeback. We shall sit on her tweets and wait patiently, and hopefully the next time she makes a statement, her microphone will work.
