Mario 40th Anniversary
Nintendo recently hosted its longest Direct presentation yet, celebrating the 40th anniversary of Mario. The presentation included announcements of new games, remasters, and even movie news tied to the iconic franchise.
Mario Movie
The anniversary lineup includes a new Super Mario movie featuring the returning voice cast: Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jack Black. The film is reported to be inspired by Super Mario Galaxy and is scheduled to premiere in theaters on April 3, 2026.
Game Remasters
Nintendo also announced remastered editions of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Both are set to launch Oct. 2, 2025, with enhanced visuals for the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2 system. The collection will include new content, such as expanded story material, and Amiibo figures are planned to release in 2026 alongside a physical print edition of Rosalina’s Storybook.
New Mario Titles
The Direct revealed Mario Tennis: Fever, a new sports entry in the series. The game features multiple modes, playable either against a computer player (CPU) or a second player. A new storyline follows the main cast after they are transformed into children and must win tennis matches to regain their age.
Nintendo also previewed downloadable content for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which will be bundled with an upgrade pack for the Switch 2. The DLC focuses on co-op gameplay in a new setting called Bellabel Park, with online and local multiplayer options. To promote the game, Nintendo announced a collectible talking flower that speaks lines from the series.
Yoshi Spinoff
In addition to Mario titles, Yoshi is getting his own adventure. The new game, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, follows the Yoshis as they encounter a new character, Mr. E, and explore a magical book filled with unknown creatures. The game is expected to release for the Switch 2 in spring 2026.
