MADISON, Ind.— The 2024 fall season marked a milestone for Madison Consolidated High School, with the Cubs securing three sectional championships and three additional teams advancing to the finals. The girls’ soccer, girls’ golf, and boys’ cross-country teams captured sectional titles, while the girls’ volleyball, boys’ soccer, and football teams earned runner-up finishes.
This unprecedented success has sparked optimism and curiosity about the future of MCHS athletics.
“This is the most successful fall we’ve had in my six years working in the athletic department,” said Patric Morrison, MCHS athletic director. “Every single fall team, except boys’ tennis, competed for sectional championships.”
Even though the boys’ tennis team fell short in sectionals, they recorded a strong 10-6 season—an improvement from prior years.
A Season of Milestones
The Cubs’ three sectional titles tie the school record for most titles in a single season. By comparison, the 2023 fall season saw two sectional championships, underscoring the significant strides made this year. Morrison attributes much of this success to a supportive and family-oriented culture.
“You go to the games, and you see the same athletes and coaches cheering on other teams,” Morrison said. “Athletes are supporting athletes, and coaches are supporting coaches. That helps build a family atmosphere where we are all supporting each other.”
Morrison also pointed to investments in facilities and coaching staff as contributing factors.
“We’re in year four of having our new weight room, and that facility has been a big part of our success,” Morrison said. “We’ve also had several coaching changes in recent years, and having the right student-athletes with the right mindset who push themselves to achieve these goals has made a difference.”
Coaches Highlight Commitment and Culture
For the girls’ golf team, back-to-back sectional titles were the result of focus and dedication, according to Head Coach Jake Shockley.
“The girls have really bought into the system and have a championship attitude,” Shockley said. “They’re committed to excellence on and off the course and have fostered a family atmosphere and strong team culture.”
Similarly, the boys’ cross-country team’s success stemmed from a strong work ethic and team buy-in, said Head Coach Kris Sandlin.
“Having guys come out, put in the work, and believe in what we’re doing has been key,” Sandlin said.
Looking Ahead
MCHS is determined to build on this year’s momentum. Plans include recruiting more athletes and intensifying off-season training. As the Cubs transition to winter sports, the community is eager to see if this historic success will carry forward.
With a foundation of hard work, family values, and strong leadership, the Madison Cubs are poised for even greater accomplishments.
