MCHS Students Reach Out

Ben Glenn is a keynote speaker at the State HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America)  Conference in Indiana. For the past two years, he has organized and promoted a Lego Christmas drive in which citizens collect new and used LEGOs to donate to children. This all started when he wanted to teach his two young daughters the importance of giving and sacrifice. The Glenn family’s love for LEGOs turned into a community wide drive with a goal of collecting LEGOs to give away to those in need of a Christmas gift. The first year, the drive collected 60 sets of LEGOs, then 100 sets, and last year it gave away 423 sets of LEGOs valued at over $10,000. Ben has a goal of 600 sets for this year.

MCHS HOSA  has decided to put on a school wide drive in the form of a competition in order to help him meet his goal. The seventh period class that collects the most LEGOs within the time frame will receive a free banana split sundae. The Madison campus will be begin collecting the toys on October 24, 2016. No LEGOs entering the school after November 1, 2016 will be allowed into the competition count, but will still be collected for the Jefferson County community wide drive. Following the ending of the school drive, MCHS will have donation boxes set up around the rivalry Turkey Shootout basketball games in order for community members to drop off donations.

Student and  HOSA member Calista Spears stated,“This drive could potentially bring MCHS and HOSA together as a team to promote giving as the holidays approach, as well as give the community a chance to give to children in a unique way.” Another member, Latasha Vasquez claims that “This drive could invite more students who attend Madison High School to join the health occupation group and make a difference as a team.”

Participants can donate money towards the drive, collect used LEGOs, or collect new LEGO sets and ship them to the sponsor. The LEGOs can be boxed up or placed into bags and shipped to CMI, Inc at  12664 Tuscanny Blvd, Carmel, IN 46032 or dropped off at Madison Consolidated High School addressed to Stephanie Shaw. For more information, participants can contact Mr. Glenn at [email protected].
