MCHS Student Body to Help Hurricane Harvey Victims

On September 2, 2017, Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas and Louisiana area, ending a twelve-year drought in which no massive hurricanes landed in the country. With winds of 130 mph and around 40 inches of rain over the course of four days, Harvey is said to be the “wettest tropical cyclone the U.S. has ever experienced”. Flooding has caused over 30,000 people to leave their homes, and triggered about 16,000 rescues so far. Each member of the MCHS student body has decided to donate one dollar to the Red Cross for the Harvey victims.

MCHS Principal Michael Gasaway remembers when he lived in Florida and had a hurricane hit the east coast.

“It was astounding to see how many people went above and beyond to show their support.”

Gasaway believes that it’s important to help others out, and he’s very proud of his students for stepping up and putting others before themselves.

“I just think it’s important to do whatever you can when you have an opportunity to serve and help out those in need. I’m lucky to be able to watch these great kids stepping up and taking action.”
