Over the summer, MCHS was happy to welcome Amanda Rohrig to the Cub Family as a new science teacher. Before she interviewed for the job at MCHS, Rohrig previously taught at Emmerich Manual High School in Indianapolis. She now teaches Chemistry and ICP at the high school and hopes to teach Physics in the future.

Rohrig states, “I have always been open-minded. I am able to understand different points of views, and I’m also a very positive person. I believe that these strengths will help me as a teacher.” She says her first impression of Madison was very positive and that she liked it much better than her former school.

“Despite what people might say, MCHS is really put together, much more than some of the other school environments I’ve experienced.”

Rohrig expressed that she not only wants to teach her students Chemistry, and that she would love to see them grow up to be scientists, but she said that she wants to mold her students into good people.

Rohrig says that this year, she is most excited for her own House Cup Championship. Amanda themes her classroom around J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, which includes a House Sorting at the beginning of the year. After taking a personality test, her students are sorted into their houses, and Rohrig then gives the students points throughout the year for good behavior and participation in class. At the end of the semester, Rohrig will average and tally up the points, then name the house who earned the most points House Cup Champions, and reward the house with a party.

Aside from teaching, Rohrig enjoys reading, sleeping, and spending time with her four month old son.

“I like pretty much any nerdy thing that you can think of.”

Rohrig stated that she wanted to be a teacher after realizing how horrible her teachers were throughout school. She claims that it is hard to go through life knowing how much they failed her, and if she could have another try at learning, she would love it.

“I never want to have other kids go through what I did, so I’m striving to do the best I can to get them to ready for the future.”

“My favorite part about teaching are my kids. Like…as people. It’s just hilarious because of the different things that they like and don’t like, and their individual personalities.  It’s just fun.”
