On Monday, January 23, after coaching various sports for Madison Consolidated Schools since 1971, Al Wilcox resigned from coaching boys golf for the Madison Cubs due to family illness. Wilcox had coached football, track, and golf for 46 years, and his esteemed coaching career has come to an end.

“It’s been a pleasure working with them,” Wilcox said. “They have a chance to go to state this year, and I wish them all the luck.”

He had been the golf coach for over 10 years and his leadership was a key factor in the success of the MCHS golf team. The boys golf team has won five consecutive sectionals.

MCHS Athletic Director Cliff Hawkins said, “It really is a tragedy that he has to leave this way.”

Cub golfer Drew Barron said, ” He is a legend, and he’ll be missed. He was a great coach, and we’re going to state for him.”

Since Wilcox’s retirement from teaching in 2014,  resignation had been a question regarding Coach Wilcox for a few years, but he kept coming back because of his love for the kids and being a part of watching them develop. It is disappointing that Coach Wilcox had to leave, but his impact on the program is greatly appreciated. MCS hopes the best for Coach Wilcox and his family.
