Last week, some air conditioners and heaters were not operational or functioning correctly at Madison Consolidated High School. There have been varied reasons for the HVAC system to not work. Spanish teacher Mr. Huerta said,” Yes, both my heat and air conditioning work, but when I turn on the air conditioning water starts to drip from the unit.”

Science teacher Mr. Dewitt said, “Neither the air conditioning or heat have worked all year, I have requested help desks and they have been marked resolved but have not been fixed yet.” Head custodian Gary Imel stated, “Some of the AC and units have extended their life expectancy… there is not a specific location in the school that there are difficulties with the units. It is all throughout the school.”

One possible reason for the heating and air problems is the construction on the renovation project interrupting pipes and wiring. Another is faulty or obsolete equipment not being completely repaired or replaced when problems arise.

Currently it is very difficult to refund heating and cooling systems due to the renovation project taking place at MCHS. According to Dewitt, “It is a law that you must pay off all loans before applying for a new loan.”

Our school system took out a two million dollar loan for the construction.

Not all air conditioners and heat are broken, many of them are fine. Other people we  interviewed were Mrs. Hartwell, Mr. Whelan, and Mrs. Kozenski. Their air conditioners and heat worked perfectly fine. While the heat and air problem does not pertain to everyone it does affect students.
